I studied in a Ukrainian language school in downtown Kyiv (literally 350 meters away from the Office of the President) in the 90s and 00s.Students who spoke Ukrainian outside of class were ridiculed as “peasants,” bullied, and driven away.
To conform, you had to speak Russian.
